CCS News

JANUARY 8, 2010

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Marc of Quality – on Dec 24, Christmas Eve, our usual transfer of the bibliographic files occurred and we transmitted the files to Marc of Quality. We transfer files every other month on or about the 24th of the month (on even months).

Novelist Select – it was not without a little glitch – but Novelist Select content was made available in iBistro on January 6 for most libraries. An omitted heading caught by LNK was fixed nearly immediately and omitted data due to custom configurations in iBistro was detected by CLK. (Thanks LNK and CLK). The CLK problem is now fixed and being tested on the test server – so should be moved to production within a week if all is well.

Where is my report?? – we seem to have a few inquiries of this type lately. To help us get your information to you soonest please include
1. where you accessed the report – in Workflows or from the Web.
2. the signon and password you used – we need this to replicate what you are seeing – or not seeing.

SUBJECT HEADING CHANGES AND OTHER AUTHORITIES NEWS:

I’m sorry to report that no more “problem families” will be out “picnicking”. The subject heading for “problem families” have been changed to “dysfunctional families” and the subject heading for “picnicking” has been changed to “picnics”. Also there was a subject heading change for “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (Imaginary place)” – it’s now an imaginary organization instead. All affected bibliographic records have been changed.

No other subject headings changes to report, except that LC has finished with the last few Islamic headings. So, now all subject headings that start with Islamic (such as “Islamic painting”) should be in direct order.

CCS sent 4258 bibliographic records to Marcive on Thursday, Dec. 17, 2009 for Overnight Authorities Processing. The records have been processed and were reloaded into our system. Of the 4258 bibliographic records, Marcive returned 1368 updated bibliographic records. Marcive also sent us 1856 new authority records. Marcive also sent their monthly file of updated authority records. 1336 were loaded into our system, as well as 328 authority records that CCS needed, but which were not available before.

LOOKING AHEAD:

As the new year dawns, here are some of the things on the general CCS radar, above and beyond the usual new Three Year Plan and (austere as we can make it without compromising our mission) budget:

*a look at adding Lexile numbers to the database including retrospectively where possible

*conversion to Oracle and Unicode

*installation of new mail and web server

*installation of Sirsi Release 3.3.1 (goodbye C Client!)

*decision about and move to replacement for iBistro

That should keep us busy and amused. Stay tuned and hang on; mind the gap, as they say on the London Underground!
