FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Richard and Linda are in Detroit attending the Sirsi Consortia SIG Conference.
The Huntley Area Public Library will close to the public on Monday, October 1, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to perform building maintenance. Library staff will be using this time for training and staff meetings, and to catch up on their workload, so they will respond to voicemail and email messages. The library will reopen on Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. for patrons. Normal business hours will resume on Tuesday. Patrons who have items due for return on Monday may deposit them in the drop-box outside the library, or visit during the evening hours.
"VIDEO RECORDINGS FOR THE HEARING IMPAIRED” SUBJECT HEADING CHANGE
Last night, a major subject heading change occurred to our database.
Library of Congress while doing other changes, decided that there should be a distinction between video recordings of films (i.e. Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, and etc.) and video recordings of television programs (i.e. the Sopranos; Lost; Blue’s clues; and etc.). So in order to do this, they have changed a few subject headings (and also their matching genre headings) around. Instead of “Video recordings for the hearing impaired”, the new heading is “Films for the hearing impaired”. Another heading with less of an impact on our database is the change from “Video recordings for people with visual disabilities” to “Films for people with visual disabilities”. (There’s only 196 of these, instead of the over 25,000 of the other).
All headings have been changed over to the new form in our database. There are references in place that should help with the transition over to the new terms. Eventually we will change headings, so that CCS also will have the distinction between video recordings of films versus video recordings of television programs, but not right away.
Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that Glenn Galang, our IT Systems Engineer, recently found a path into Sirsi’s free online training courses that doesn’t require logging into the Client Care web page? Sirsi is notoriously quick to expire Client Care passwords and users are often discouraged by the need to get a new one when they try to review a free training session. Being able to skip the login/password step will make it much easier to take advantage of the Essential Skills and Basic Circulation courses that are available without cost from Sirsi. I’ve edited the “Guide to Sirsi’s Free Training Sessions” document to reflect the easier access method and it’s now available on the Sirsi Resources link of the CCS web page (under the Documented Procedures heading).
