CCS News

JULY 29, 2011

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Power – Sunday July 23. We had a power outage again at the CCS headquarters on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately this one was short lived. Systems were down for about one hour that afternoon.

Offline test – When workstations utilized by circulation are upgraded or the subject of network revisions at your library – please take the time to run a few transactions through the standalone process and make sure that the revisions do not affect the standalone collection and download. We will process a test like this for you anytime.

Help Desk – this is a good time to remind everyone again to use WonderDesk and not private emails to report incidents needing attention. The phone works too!!

Vacations
– we will have staff members staggering vacations through the mid August. Our vacation schedule is on the WonderDesk home page too. Willie is away August 1-6, Linda is away August 5-16, Bob is away August 15-22. (Ed. Note: Richard will be away Aug. 10-16.)

BiblioCommons – Thank you for your input on the matter of the hold counts. BiblioCommons was able to intervene and turn this off quickly with an apology from one of their founders.

SVA: NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS:

We are pleased to report that SVA did not fail at the usual 10:45 AM on Thursday, July 28. We remain vigilant but are of course pleased by the lack of disruption of service.

AUTHORITIES NEWS:

This week, CCS loaded 2 files that were obtained from Marcive. One file contained 1915 updated authority records and the other file contained 474 authority records that were needed, but not available until now.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Power Outage – Many folks have asked us if we know the reason for the power outage. We really have no way of knowing, but we have to assume that we were amongst the “rolling” outages that occurred while ComEd was fixing other problems. It might have been necessary to disable this region to repair the overall situation. Or functioning equipment could have been over-stressed during the outages. We need to thank our night operator Rory Warfield, who stayed all night so that we could be alerted to the first flicker of light, and we need to thank Bob Barth, who monitored our plight just about hourly while off duty and then ran right over to CCS to restart systems when the power came up. Thanks for your support and patience during the outage.

BookMyne – we are in the beginning stages of testing BookMyne which is a product for mobile devices from SirsiDynix. We talked about this during the PAS meeting July 21 – so stay tuned for more information.

SVA – as this is written, SVA is going well and we continue to monitor it to see if we can prevent the failed calls list from growing large again.

WELCOME BACK!
We are very pleased to welcome back Jo Anne Holmes after her hip replacement surgery.

JULY 8, 2011

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
SVA – SVA has been checked more that regularly since the problem with long failed call lists was discovered on July 1. SVA appear to be entirely stable and the failed call lists have returned to normal levels. The reason for the problem remains a mystery despite best efforts (and considerable time) spent in diagnosing the issue with Sirsidynix. We need to be watchful in case this re-occurs and then detect some common circumstances.

Memory Board – a memory board was posting faults to our log and was fixed by Sun engineers on Wednesday (July 6) morning. The repair necessitated taking the system down, but all went well and we were ready for a normal day on Wednesday by 8am.

Help Desk Incidents–
we need to emphasize the need to report through the Help Desk (WonderDesk). During the recent problems with SVA, one library reported through private phone to a person who was on vacation, one library reported to a private email and one library reported to the Help Desk. To the staff on duty this looked like a single library problem and was dealt with in that manner. But the problem affected all SVA users. We detected this on Tuesday and were able to “hop to it” but it reminds us to remind you the WonderDesk Help Desk is the way to go!
