CCS News

OCTOBER 1, 2010

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Release 3.3.1 Test System Progress – We have installed Release 3.3.1 on one of our test servers. At this point we are doing some internal testing before we open the system up to general testing. We are currently spending time analyzing the patron database and understanding reports and routines that change the name field to three distinct fields. It is our goal to identify “problem” records on the test server so that they can be fixed on the production server before the conversion if possible. When we complete that analysis we will be able to open the release up for library testing.

ROGER ANDERSON UPDATE:
Roger is expected back on Monday, October 11. He has been checking e-mails and doing some CCS work from home.

LIBRARY CLOSINGS:
Glencoe will be closed Friday, October 1 for a Staff Development Day.

Winnetka-Northfield will be closed for a Staff Institute Day on Friday, October 8.

DES PLAINES IS BACK IN THE MIX FOR HOLDS AND DELIVERY!
As of the first week of October when NSLS’ LSTA funding kicks in, Des Plaines will be fully re-integrated into CCS holds for both fills and requests. This is a happy day for the library and for CCS. I am told that the library has budgeted for delivery if necessary when their next fiscal year commences on January 1, so even if System funding doesn’t arrive by then (anyone want to put money on Springfield NOT announcing shortly after the election that there’s even less money available than previously disclosed and bills will lag even further?) and delivery again becomes a paying proposition, Des Plaines should remain a participant.

SEPTEMBER 24, 2010

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Closed days – during the month of October we usually clean out the calendar of closed dates. We will be purging all closed dates before 2010 during the next few weeks. Then we will send an email requesting dates for 2011.

LIBRARY CLOSING:
Glencoe will be closed for a Staff Development Day on Friday, October 1.

AUTHORITIES NEWS:
Earlier this week, CCS loaded 2 files that were obtained from Marcive. One file contained 1574 updated authority records and the other file contained 394 authority records that were needed, but not available until now. What does this all mean to the CCS database? An up to date database that includes all available individual death dates, current references, and subject headings.

CCS Authorities Librarian

CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:

None! But we hope everyone who goes to ILA has a good conference.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Email notification – the number of emails we send on a daily basis is growing as more patrons add email notification to their account. To help a patron who claims he/she is not getting emails, please do several things (1) ask the patron if they had checked their junk mail (2) send the patron a little test message to the address in his/her record (3) check your copies of emails sent to your patrons to see if a copy of the email is there. (4) see if you have a bounced message for the patron - if you do send it to us via Wonderdesk. That message often contains cryptic error codes that give us a hint of what has gone wrong.

CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:

Tues., 9/21, 9:30, Lincolnwood: Maintenance Coordinators

Wed., 9/22, 10:00, Cary: Governing Board

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Indexes – we had wanted to rebuild our indexes over the Labor Day weekend, but were unable to proceed due to trouble with the tape drive when we were backing up files. The tape drive has been fixed but we will delay this procedure in order to provide more time to study the overall situation with SirsiDynix.

DIRECTOR’S STATION PEFORMANCE IMPROVES:
Director’s Station access is now better after 10:00 a.m. After bumping up 3 reports from WorkFlows, data manipulation in our Director’s Station server finishes 45 minutes earlier or about 9:30 a.m instead of 10:15 a.m. Our Director’s Station server then re-starts the services to free up system memory for us to use during our visit to the application. Just remember that when the re-start of services is performed your access will be disconnected. Go back and reconnect, hopefully, this time for a better connection.

Bumping up these reports and freeing up system memory made a little difference in accessing DS after 10 a.m. Willie was at HUK September 1, 2010 and experienced the access improvement to DS during the DS training session. Please note that we can still access or create reports before 10 a.m, but should anticipate some slow connectivity.

CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:

Wed., 9/15, 9:30, CCS: SCRAP

Wed., 9/15, 1:30, CCS: BiblioCommons Task Force

Thur., 9/16, Crystal Lake: PAS

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Certified vendors - We have asked SirsiDynix to restore the list of certified vendors and products to their web site so that we can all keep informed. At the moment we have six projects in the works involving SIP (and one more potential in the wings) so we know that this is becoming an ever important method for system interoperation.

BiblioCommons – in the next week we will be testing BiblioCommons against the production server. This is an important step and brings us ever closer to a full implementation sometime in the next few months.

Director’s Station – if you are interested in further training for staff, please contact Linda. We reserve the first Wednesday morning of each month for training by Willie. How about a few minutes of refresher, working through a few key reports, or basic survival tactics? Contact Linda and we’ll see if you can come out for some informal one-on-one “ lunch and learn” time.

Indexes – as of this writing we are talking to SirsiDynix regarding building of indexes. Sirsi wants us to rebuild indexes to repair problems with the bibliographic files. It is likely that we will have iBistro down from 9:15 Sunday until 9:30 Monday morning over the Labor Day holiday.

Staffing – the Computer Room will be staffed on Sunday 9/5 during normal hours. We will be closed on Labor Day.

CCS’ SUCCESS STORY FOUND ON MARCIVE’S NEW WEBSITE:
CCS was asked to describe its relationship with Marcive for their new web-site. Here’s the link to it and the story about CCS.

BONNIE’S BACK AND ROGER’S ON TRACK!
CCS is delighted that Bonnie Owens is back on the job, albeit with a procedure and a few appointments remaining. And Roger Anderson has started his projected two weeks of rehab; so far all seems to be according to expectations. He’s still targeting the October 6 Catalogers meeting for his return.

HAPPY HOLIDAY WEEKEND TO ALL FROM THE CCS STAFF!

CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:

Wed., 9/8, 10:00, CCS: Executive Committee

Fri., 9/10, Lake Villa: Circulation
