CHRIS’S CORNER:
Here's some inspiration that speaks to the importance of public libraries and our jobs.
My final stop is Vietnam. At one of our site visits, I chatted with a young Vietnamese man who speaks 5 languages and hopes to travel to Europe. Before I mentioned that I am a librarian, he told me how much he likes to read and how his dream is for people in his country to have better access to a wide range of books. He explained that while there are libraries in Vietnam, the collections are outdated and censored.
His eyes lit up when I told him about my job. I talked about the kinds of resources that our libraries have. I encouraged him to stick with his plans to travel and to visit the libraries in Europe and elsewhere because he would be amazed with what he sees.
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
CCS HOLIDAY SCHEDULE FOR THE INDEPENDENCE DAY WEEKEND:
The CCS Staff will be observing their Independence Day holiday on July 3rd. As most libraries will be open that day, Jim O’Day will be working July 3rd to be available for any issues or requests that arise. The night shift will be staffed as usual. The CCS office will be closed on Saturday, July 4. July 5th staffing will be as usual.
NEW CCS EMAIL SERVER:
CCS has deployed its new email server, in our virtual environment, utilizing the ccslib.org domain name. The email server is based on the Zimbra suite running on top of CentOS 7 Core as its base OS.
What does this mean to the libraries? For the immediate future, nothing. We will be testing the new email server for it's functionality, in a live environment, and making any necessary adjustments as needed. What you will be seeing in the immediate future is select CCS staff using the new email server to correspond out. You will notice what CCS staff is using the new email server by observing the trailing domain of @ccslib.org instead of @ccs.nsls.lib.il.us. ex: jpadilla@ccslib.org instead of jpadilla@ccs.nsls.lib.il.us
Replying back to the new email address domain is okay and encouraged. It will help us heavily test our email system prior to planning a cut over date for the rest of the CCS staff.
The @ccs.nsls.lib.il.us domain will not be going away any time soon and still will be used after the cut over. The new email system can and will handle both domains. This will allow libraries to get accustomed to using the @ccslib.org address and allow for staff to update any CCS contacts/lists with the new domain prior to discontinuing the ccs.nsls.lib.il.us domain.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
Last week, CCS sent a file of 8085 bibliographic records to Marcive for authorities processing. 4923 records were updated and returned to CCS, as well as 3897 new authority records. All of these records have been loaded into our system.
Marcive also sent two other files, one of which was loaded and the other will be loaded next week . The one that will be loaded next week contains 4001 updated authority records. The file that was already loaded, contained 469 new authority records that were needed in our database, but were not available before this time.

As probably every reader knows by now, this is my last day at CCS and my last issue editing CCS News. I’ll keep my farewell salutation short, not because of lack of thoughts or feelings, and just say thank you to everyone who’s made my stay at CCS a terrific one and a source of great pride in shared accomplishment, and that I wish you all the best of everything! I’m very sure that Chris Holly will do a great job of helping CCS move forward and will be cheering it all on! – RS
