CCS News

MARCH 7, 2008

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

iBistro down time – we had another episode of iBistro acting up over the weekend. The library has done some work on their network, we have done some testing on our end, and we have all worked together to mitigate our risk for the coming weekend.

Network – the iBistro episode of the last few weeks serves to emphasize the importance of a robust network structure at each library in addition to at the central server site. If you are doing work on your network – particularly (but not exclusively) as it involves wireless -- please get us involved early in the project as some of you have done already. It could help to stave off problems down the road.

Daylight savings time – we return to Daylight Savings Time this weekend. Our systems will automatically roll over to the new time. SVA system will be manually reset before the next calling out period. Please let us know if you detect any time related anomalies with the system this weekend. Also be aware that we will not change the clock on the test server – it is still on the old calendar for DST and will change automatically later in the month.
Easter Sunday – according to the policy tables all libraries will be closed Easter Sunday. The computer room will not be staffed that day. We will however be staffed as usual on Friday and Saturday of that weekend.
CCS NEWS in PDF format – this is the last week we issue CCS news in the PDF format! We will continue to send you the usual message and link when CCS News is posted.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that the wizard often called the “binoculars” search in the C client is also available in the Java client? It’s now a Helper button and does not have its own separate wizard/icon on the Java toolbar. This search option provides a dropdown list of Boolean operators to use between terms when trying to narrow a search for items in WorkFlows, and is similar to the Advanced Search available in the iBistro catalog.

The binoculars Helper is found at the top of the Item Search and Display window, so in Java you must open the IS&D wizard before you can see it. The Java Helper image also resembles a pair of binoculars, but there’s a plus sign (+) near the lower edge of the icon. If you hover your curser over the button you’ll see that it’s now called “Advanced Search” in Java.

The default version of the Helper only accommodates two search terms, but there are Properties associated with this Helper (under the Advanced Search - Configure button) where you can set it up to work approximately the same way it does in the C client. But you need a WorkFlows SUP level login or higher to make the changes at your workstation. Ken Victorson
