CCS News

JANUARY 15, 2010

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
SVA RENEWALS - There is a new report that may be accessed from your Web Reports under the heading Monthly Reports. It is called SVA Renewals. This will give you an indication of how many renewal transactions were created by your patrons each month, and how many of your items were renewed using SVA each month.

ORACLE/UNICODE conversion test to begin – During the month of January we will be begin the test process to convert the system from our current Informix database to Unicode using the Oracle database system. This will impact our test server environment for Workflows. Please stay tuned as we progress with the testing phase over the next two months. We will be in a better position to plan conversion of the production machine once our testing results are complete. We hope to convert to Oracle and Unicode in the spring.

SUBJECT HEADING CHANGES:

LCSH subject headings (and not genres) for headings such as “Animated videos”, “Documentary videos”, “Educational videos”, and “Instructional videos” have been changed to “Animated films”, “Documentary films”, “Educational films”, and “Instructional films”.

Other subject heading changes include the breakup of the subject heading of “Peddlers and peddling” to “Peddlers” and “Peddling”. All affected bib. records will revert to “Peddlers” for now, but in a few weeks, I will manually change any headings if needed to “Peddling”.

The one other major subject heading change (which does involve lots of our bibs.) includes closing the date span for the subject heading of “War on Terrorism, 2001-2009”. LC decided to close the date span, because this phrase was coined by the Bush administration, and is no longer in use by the current government. In regards to this “War on Terrorism, 2001- --Law and legislation” will now be “Terrorism—Prevention—Law and legislation”.
