CHRIS’S CORNER:
I had the pleasure of sitting in on the last two meetings of the Database Management Task Force as they worked out how to reconcile the utility of the Item Cat 4 field. It was great to see the levels of engagement - Directors, Technical and Public Services staff all came together to talk through the issues at hand. Naturally, the key focus of the discussion was the patrons, which raises the ever present question of how best to market to them.. How do we further cultivate our super patrons? How do we market to the non-users?
A couple of months ago I heard Kelly McDonald speak. Kelly is the author of “How To Market To People Not Like You.” You can also see her speak on YouTube. Kelly talks about how Harley-Davidson grew its business by marketing to women. Naturally it’s our job to think outside of ourselves and represent the views of the patrons who are not like us. What creative things are you doing at your library to attract and serve the people not like you? I’d love to hear from you. Cholly@ccs.nsls.lib.il.us
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BLUECLOUD UPDATE:
Sirsi has announced the release of BLUEcloud Central 2015.05. The BLUEcloud Central 2015.05 release includes feature additions and bug fixes for BLUEcloud Analytics, MobileCirc and eResource Central. Highlights are:
BLUEcloud Analytics
Libraries can now run reports and view dashboards on both the catalog- and item-level data, providing insights into patron usage. With the delivered Catalog Analysis Dashboard users can view item counts, publication years by type, item statuses, prices, and more with the additional breakdown by in each tab for both inactive and active titles. Users will also benefit from the delivered standard reports for collection title counts, collection item counts, item count by publication year, and an item information report that provides a robust starting point to create your own custom reports on item and catalog data.
eResource Central
De-licensing has been added to automatically remove titles to which a library no longer subscribes or for which the contract has expired. This feature is available to customers of supporting
vendors.
eResource Central Bug Fixes:
ERS-2073 Auto-sync multiple collections
If a package was synced to multiple collections, any items that were no longer marked as "new" would not be added to subsequent collections, and therefore, would not be exported. This has been fixed to include all new items in all of the collections they were added to. Also, any title that was found in a vendor package but was never added to a collection is now added to ensure that all of the titles in each collection are available to patrons
MobileCirc Bug Fixes:
MBC-119 Scrolling through Renew User on iOS is cumbersome with many items
The Renew user screen was using a popup box to display items for renewal. Because iOS performs poorly with large popups, scrolling through this list was very slow. This issue has been fixed by altering the Renew user list so that it does not use a popup.
MBC-132 Customized Policy List
Policies are not showing in MobileCirc If a user selected all of the policies for the Customize Policy List wizard, none of the policies displayed in MobileCirc. This has been fixed and the policies are now displayed in MobileCirc as expected.
MBC-213 Activation channel and institution filter lost if user revisits activation page and clicks apply
Any activation channells or institution filters were lost if the user returned to the activation page and chooses Apply. This has been fixed so that activation channels and institution filters are preserved.
TEST SERVER TAPE DRIVE:
On Wednesday, 05/27/2015, Oracle Field Service was on-site to upgrade the firmware of a hardware component in our Test Server. This enables us to complete the installation of the new LTO5 tape drive used to sync the test server to our production server as well as backups for the test server.
