FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
OCLC PATCH – The OCLC number format patch will be installed on the Workflows production server on the morning of Tuesday, June 4. This means Workflows, SVA and some BiblioCommons functions will be down for up to one hour between 6 am and 8 am. Please alert your early arrival staff of the planned down time. Installation of the patch should be transparent to most staff users, and no client upgrade is required. This patch will allow Workflows to accommodate OCLC’s announcement that the OCLC number may have a longer length beginning July 1. We have been testing the patch and have found no glitches.
OCLC ILL MIGRATION:
Some of our libraries are probably already tired of being nagged about the imminent OCLC transition of ILL from WorldCat to WebShare, but it is important that each library take the necessary steps by January 1. Please review the materials we’ve e-mailed out this week and earlier, register for the training the State Library is orchestrating with OCLC, take the necessary steps, and bombard JoAnne Holmes at CCS with any questions. Thanks!

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
My PC – if you are switching from PCRES to MyPC, please get in touch with the Computer Room as you are planning the switch. TBS is seeking certification for MyPC and we can see they are making rapid progress. We have also confirmed that for this product the SIP license is transferable. Contact Linda Zaleski in the Computer Room for questions or if you need more information.
3M Cloud – we have been in conversation with 3M about the technical aspects of the 3M Cloud implementation. Also, a new SIP license is needed for the 3M Cloud implementation. Currently there are two libraries using 3M Cloud. Please contact the Computer Room via the Wonderdesk or get in touch with Linda Zaleski if you are signing up for this service.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
This week CCS loaded 2 files from Marcive. One file included 3815 updated authority records and the other included 314 new authority records that our database needed, but were not available before.
Last night, most of the remainder of subject headings which included “Violoncello” in it were flipped to the new current heading of “Cello”. The last 100 subject headings will be changed (probably by hand) before the end of the month.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Check Dates - Summer is almost here. That means you should double check your closed dates when items are not due. Be sure that they are correct for the summer. If you need to make a change to your table of dates, please do so through the WonderDesk and leave ample lead time for the changes to be read into the server. At least a few days is always optimal.
SIP processes and SmartPort interruptions Wednesday - About 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon you reported that SIP processes and SmartPort transfers were interrupted. Thank you for your patience as we worked on this problem with SirsiDynix. They were able to have all features running normally by 6:00 p.m. We were able to attribute the outage to work that had been done earlier in the day for our annual security check. Those programs which we have run annually for many years, likely coupled with our current increase in SIP use, caused too many processes to occur. We have learned from this experience and will change the routine for next time.
Test System - On Thursday the test systems were down so that we could conserve cold air in the server room as we repair a gasket on our normal air conditioner.
CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:
Tuesday, 5/14, noon, Jameson's: Technical Group Chairs Lunch
Wednesday, 5/15, 9:30, CCS: SCRAP
Thursday, 5/16, 9:30, Glenview: PAS

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
New Staff Member - As of May 1 we welcome Jim O’Day to the Computer Room in the position of Customer Support Technician. Jim is familiar to us as he was on our part-time staff over the last few years. Jim has a wealth of experience gained in his former day jobs in the IT shops of two large firms in the area, as well as an early position as a library page.
We are thrilled to have Jim come back to us as a full time employee.
OCLC Number format patch – the patch to accommodate the upcoming expansion of the OCLC number is now being tested on the TEST server.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
Our database is in the midst of some major subject headings changes. Earlier this month, major changes occurred to the subject headings of the Bible. For headings dealing with the Old Testament or the New Testament, these terms are now spelled out in accordance with our new cataloging rules of RDA. So for a history of the Old Testament, look under “Bible. Old Testament—History” (earlier it would have been “Bible. O.T.—History”).
If you wish to read someone’s interpretation of a specific book of the Bible, like Matthew, look under “Bible. Matthew – Criticism, interpretations, etc.” (earlier you would have included either “O.T.” or “N.T.” depending on which book you were interested in, or for example the former heading would have been, “Bible. N.T. Matthew – Criticism, interpretations, etc.”)
Besides the Bible, there were also changes for the Koran – you should now search under it as “Qurʼan”.
There will be massive musical subject heading changes also in accordance with RDA. All headings that include “Violoncello” will now be “Cello” (or if you’re looking for a biography about someone who plays the instrument, use “Cellists” instead of “Violoncellists”). Many of these headings have changed, but there are still a lot of headings that use the old terminology. The rest of the changes will occur over the next few months.
Many files of updated authority records were sent to CCS from Marcive over the past few months. Over 14,000 updated authority records were loaded into our system in April. Last week, Marcive sent a file of 2,012 updated authority records and another file of 254 new matches (or authority records that CCS needed, but were not available before). They’ve all been loaded into our system.
CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:
Tuesday, 5/7, 10:00, CCS: Executive Committee
Wednesday, 5/8, Cary: Catalogers (Workshop)
