CHRIS’S CORNER:

Who's going to ALA?

Due to my MBA program's trip to Asia, I won't be able to attend ALA Annual this year.  Having been a vendor during the blizzard-induced slowness of the Midwinter meeting, I had plenty of down time to check out some of the latest products and features on the empty exhibit floor. Lately, I've been finding more of the exciting stuff to be among smaller vendors with more specific, focused products.

I'll be curious to hear what the latest buzz is at ALA, so please feel free to contact me after the conference.

If you are attending, here are some tips:  When looking at ILS options, ask vendors to show you some of the more unique parts of your current workflows that either work really well for you or currently have cumbersome workarounds. For example, ask to see how EDI is setup and how well does it work for members of consortia with different vendor profiles? Are there any code limits that would necessitate consortia needing to make compromises on circ rules, hold rules, or other policies?  Can any field or group of fields be setup as a facet in a discovery platform? Can separate user interfaces be configured per library in the Discovery platform? When asking about features, make sure to find out how they would work for a consortium. Also, as is typical, there will be more marketing people floating about than product experts, so ask to chat with a Product Expert or Product Engineer.

If you'd like to chat prior to or after the conference feel free to contact me. cholly@ccs.nsls.lib.il.us

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

UPS MAINTENANCE TONIGHT:
Our main UPS system will be having maintenance work done tonight starting at 9:15PM.  Services and operations will still continue to function as normal during this time. The work should take approximately 2 to 4 hours. There are some caveats.  This means our entire system will be on ComEd during this period of time which means if ComEd goes out, all services will go down hard.

CCS staff will be on standby during this time in case of an emergency.  We will send out an email update, to the appropriate lists, prior to the maintenance work to be done and the again upon completion.
