FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

New Staff Member - As of May 1 we welcome Jim O’Day to the Computer Room in the position of Customer Support Technician.  Jim is familiar to us as he was on our part-time staff over the last few years. Jim has a wealth of experience gained in his former day jobs in the IT shops of two large firms in the area, as well as an early position as a library page.

We are thrilled to have Jim come back to us as a full time employee.

OCLC Number format patch – the patch to accommodate the upcoming expansion of the OCLC number is now being tested on the TEST server.

AUTHORITIES NEWS:
Our database is in the midst of some major subject headings changes. Earlier this month, major changes occurred to the subject headings of the Bible. For headings dealing with the Old Testament or the New Testament, these terms are now spelled out in accordance with our new cataloging rules of RDA. So for a history of the Old Testament, look under “Bible. Old Testament—History” (earlier it would have been “Bible. O.T.—History”).

If you wish to read someone’s interpretation of a specific book of the Bible, like Matthew, look under “Bible. Matthew – Criticism, interpretations, etc.” (earlier you would have included either “O.T.” or “N.T.” depending on which book you were interested in, or for example the former heading would have been, “Bible. N.T. Matthew – Criticism, interpretations, etc.”)

Besides the Bible, there were also changes for the Koran – you should now search under it as “Qurʼan”.

There will be massive musical subject heading changes also in accordance with RDA. All headings that include “Violoncello” will now be “Cello” (or if you’re looking for a biography about someone who plays the instrument, use “Cellists” instead of “Violoncellists”). Many of these headings have changed, but there are still a lot of headings that use the old terminology. The rest of the changes will occur over the next few months.

Many files of updated authority records were sent to CCS from Marcive over the past few months. Over 14,000 updated authority records were loaded into our system in April.  Last week, Marcive sent a file of 2,012 updated authority records and another file of 254 new matches (or authority records that CCS needed, but were not available before). They’ve all been loaded into our system.
