FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Computer Room Staffing – the headliner is that Bob is away on medical leave and we are coping. (He fell off his roof and suffered a number of broken bones, an injured lung and collateral damage. He’s in good spirits and making progress, but there is no timetable for his return; we’re hoping to count in weeks.) In the coming weeks Linda will be away Aug 1-12 and Frank will be away Aug 18-24 on previously planned vacations with family. Thanks for your understanding while we are thinly staffed.
iBistro News - After being delayed by several weeks, the machine arrived at Sirsi’s headquarters in Huntsville and will be staged there. It will arrive here at CCS HQ sometime the week of August 11 and will be installed to our network beginning August 18 but not put into service then. There will be some file copies and other work and we will run some tests with it on our network at that time. We will keep you appraised on our plans to bring the machine live as we progress with the project and will definitely give adequate notice of any planned “go live” date.
Local Notice Printing – we have also sent a message to all the libraries involved in the last phase of local notice printing. Because of Bob’s absence we will delay turning off the old notices for at least one week.
AUTHORITIES UPDATE:
CCS sent 2527 bibliographic records to Marcive on Thursday, July 24th for Overnight Authorities Processing. The records have been processed and were reloaded into our system. Of the 2527 bibliographic records, Marcive returned 750 updated bibliographic records. Marcive also sent us 1230 new authority records. CCS will be sending groups of records for processing each month, so that our database will be kept up to date as much as possible.

DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that it’s time to remind everyone about a work-around for an error message that pops up when you try to use function keys in Java? The message reads: “There are open wizards that require attention. Please close the wizards.” I’ve written about this before, but several people have asked about it recently so it bears repeating. This error is particularly annoying because closing the wizard prevents you from completing the action you were trying to do with the function key. For example, the F9 function key brings up the Place Hold window when you’re in a search results screen. It allows you to search for an item using the Item Search & Display wizard and, when you locate what you want, press F9 to put a hold on the item without changing screens. But if you close the wizard (as instructed in the message), you can’t take advantage of the F9 key’s shortcut to placing holds.
The work-around is to activate the Multiple Windows Display option found under the Preference menu on the Desktop Setup window. Once you have the ability to open multiple windows, you will not see the error message or be blocked from using function keys. The procedure for setting up multiple windows is not difficult and there’s a document on the CCS web page called Multiple Windows display in Java that provides an illustrated guide to setting up this menu bar option. It’s found on the Sirsi Resource Page, under the Documented Procedures column. – Ken Victorson
