FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Wonderdesk is best! – we have had a number of issues reported to personal boxes that would be more suitable as a Help Desk Incident. Why? Because messages sent to our individual emails can sit in a mailbox during vacations, but WonderDesk incidents are viewed, tracked and reviewed by all CCS staff. Additional good ways to get in touch with CCS staff are by our shared email CRSTAFF@ccs.nsls.lib.il.us or by phone 847-342-5303.
We are in the vacation season – so please bear with us if some requests take a little bit longer. Frank will be away the week June 25. Willie will be away at the beginning of July. Bob will be away again in the middle of July. Linda will be away the first two weeks of August. If you are working on special projects please be sure the computer room has adequate lead time so we can best take care of your needs.
DATABASE BATCHLOAD UPDATE:
We sent our latest database copy for batchloading on June 13.
DID YOU KNOW?
Did you know that in Java you can limit item searches by Publication Year, Format, Item Type, etc., just as you can in the C client? In my article two weeks ago, I wrote about setting default Properties for the “binoculars” search in Java - where the Boolean operators AND, NOT, OR, and XOR are used to narrow item search results. But there’s another kind of binoculars search in the C client that’s not on the main toolbar; it’s a Helper button at the top of the initial Item Search and Display window. This type of search is also available as a Helper on the Java item search screen. It works the same way as it does in the C client - clicking the Helper brings up a window that allows you to narrow your searches by Publication Year, Format, Item Type, Location, Item Cat1, Item Cat2, Language, Shadow, or Sort order. You can also set the Class Scheme for Browse searches, as well a variety of display options.
You set default values for each of these parameters using Properties for the Item Search and Display wizard. But because it’s a Helper, not everyone will be able to do this with their login. If you right-click on the Item Search wizard to display the Properties window, and do not see a tab labeled Helpers next to the Defaults tab, you’ll have to ask someone with a SUP or ADMIN login to set the defaults for you. Whoever makes the changes will find a field called Configure Options For Item Search under the Properties/Helpers tab, with a Configure button next to it. Put a checkmark in the Configure Options box and click the Configure button. The screen that displays will permit you to change the default parameters for your binoculars Helper button so that you can always limit searches by a particular Publication Year, Format, Item Type, Location, etc. – Ken Victorson
