CCS News October 25, 2013

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
SMS Notification - In the coming weeks we will be talking with a Sirsi Technical Advisor about the steps necessary to bring SMS Patron Self-Registration to your patrons.  At the Webmasters Meeting on October 30th, we will present an overview of the SMS Patron Self-Registration process and look for input from the group.  The testing of SMS Notification is going well.  Currently two libraries are in the testing stage.  If your library would like to participate in the testing, please contact Frank (after November 1).

Network Changes - The network changes performed last Sunday went as planned.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Staff Absence - Frank will be out of the office Monday, October 28 and will return to the office on Friday, November 1.  Please use the Help Desk or call the Computer Room.  Please do not leave a message on Frank's voice mail.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Closed Dates for the 2013 Holiday period:

Jim sent out an email (on 10/15) to department heads requesting your closing times and days for the upcoming November, December, and January holidays. Please let us know your closing hours for those days before, or after the holiday as well. If you have not replied, please take a moment to reply to Jim’s email with this information.

Network Maintenance:

Reminder: on Sunday October 20th from 8:30 to 9:00 A.M., the system will be offline in order that we can replace a network switch here at CCS HQ. Both SVA and Workflows will be offline during this time. Patrons will be able to search BiblioCommons, but some functions will be limited since Login, Place Holds and My Account will not be accessible. We will put up the customary message prior to the event.

Director’s Station:

Earlier this week we had calls about Director’s Station connectivity. It turned out to be a few missingWindows Updates that caused the problem. The server was rebooted twice after the updates were finished being installed, and the server and connections seemed to be back to normal. FYI Director’s Station runs on Internet Explorer (IE) -7, and Mozilla/Firefox 3.6 browsers; anything newer than that will not behave or work properly.

OUT OF OFFICE:
CCS Administrator Richard Shurman will be out of the office Thur., Oct. 17 through Friday, October 25.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Mid-Day Pick list: The cause is not yet known why the Mid-Day Pick List fails every so often, but one possibility is that libraries who use the On-Demand Pick List Wizard are accessing it while the Mid-Day is running.
We are asking that libraries who use the On-Demand Pick List Wizard refrain from accessing it between 12:30 and 1:15 in the afternoon.

Weeding of Reports:
We will be weeding out some reports in the upcoming weeks. Bob will contact the libraries before any weeding process begins to make sure the reports that will be affected will be OK to remove. It’s part of our normal housekeeping of the server which we often do from time to time. More to come in the coming weeks.

Computer Room renovation:
In the coming weeks we will be remodeling our Server Room, and Computer Room area. Please be sure to use the CCS Help Desk so we don’t miss anything in case we are away from our work areas.

BiblioCommons:
A release went through this week that now fixes the bug that was preventing libraries from featuring only CCS user-generated content content on the Recent Activity page.

If you look at Lake Villa's page now, you'll see that only CCS reviews, lists, ratings, etc...are displayed and promoted: http://lakevilla.bibliocommons.com/dashboard/index

We encourage all libraries to promote the CCS content on this page rather than all the BiblioCommons content.

Network Maintenance:
Reminder, on Sunday October 20th from 8:30 to 9:00 A.M., the system will be offline in order that we can replace a network switch here at CCS HQ.  Both SVA and Workflows will be offline during this time. Enterprise Testing – this is a reminder that the Enterprise trial is still available through the morning of Sept 27 and we value your input. The response time is very good and there has been tweaking to searching.  If you tested before early September, you should test again. Here are the links.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Web Site Revisions and BiblioCommons – BiblioCommons has gently reminded us that “wholesale” changes to your original configuration (usually in conjunction with rebranding your web site) take up to 1 day of effort and they must charge up to $1500. So if you are planning a website rewrite please plan for this additional cost.  We will ask BiblioCommons for a quote after you have revised and submitted the configuration chart with the changes and the intended launch date.

Occasional changes such as incorporation of a new logo or changed link will continue to be done under normal maintenance with no extra charge.

We keep an electronic version of your original chart on file in case you need it for revisions.

BiblioCommons and local content
- we have asked some of you to set the content radio button to show only locally generated content in the sidebar and Recently Reviewed.  This was a suggestion made by BiblioCommons. We have demonstrated to BiblioCommons that this feature does not work as intended at our site. BiblioCommons is aware of the problem.
