FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
3.4.1.2 - Release 3.4.1.2 is performing well for us. But it is in a normal “shake down” period too, and keeps things in the Computer Room lively. Some processes running long into the morning have interfered with our normal shutdown and startup procedure (which we call Halt and Run ). Slowly we are tuning the system to eliminate such unanticipated problems.
BiblioCommons – there have been two situations identified. BC is sometimes giving the wrong edition of a title as a result, and we have seen instances of the HOLD button not displaying. Both situations have been reported.
Golden (Wonder Desk) Tickets – when sending us problem reports, specifics are like gold to us! Please be sure to send us specifically the title, OCLC#, item#, Patron bar code and Profile, Item Type and bar code, URL, email address etc. as it pertains to the question at hand. In BiblioCommons we need the URL for an errant record if you have it. Screen shots are great.
LIBRARY CLOSING:
Lake Villa will be closed to the public on Friday and Saturday, December 7 and 8, for new carpeting.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
On Thursday, Nov. 29th, CCS sent 8507 bibliographic records to Marcive for authorities processing. 2272 bibliographic records were updated and sent back to us. They were reloaded into our system, along with 3570 new authority records.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
NOTICES – Notices were changed this week so that the Zip Code is in compliance with US postal regulations.
CLOSED DATES – the table of closed dates where items should not become due has been updated. Be sure to check your holiday dates in the Symphony policy tables.
ANNIVERSARY – We congratulate Bob Barth on 25 years with CCS. We have been fortunate to have his consistent, patient and ever-so-knowledgeable expertise through these many years from the early days of Geac/CLSI and Symphony to the present.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
This week was a busy week of loading Marcive files. Two files were loaded into our system . One contained 4891 updated authority records and the other contained 307 new authority records that were needed in our database, but were not available before this time.
In the file of updated authority records, there was a large number of heading changes that can be attributed to RDA (the new cataloging rules that more and more bibliographic & authority records are using).
So, what does this mean to your catalog? You’ll be seeing a lot more headings like “Harris, Andy (Writer on food and travel)” or “Russell, Vince (Comic artist)” that include parenthesis with author descriptions in it. Headings that used to include titles of nobility and rank are not going to be included now, so the English poet and novelist, Sir Walter Scott, his new heading is “Scott, Walter, 1771-1832” (don’t worry, there are references that will get you from the old heading to the new one). Another big heading change which shows that ranks are not used, but relationships like “Jr.” can be used now. It’s for the science fiction author, L. E. Modesitt – his new heading is “Modesitt, L. E., Jr., 1943-“
Once the software catches up to RDA, you will also be seeing public notes that will give a short biographical note or a short corporate history. Here’s one that was added for Jack Benny - “Jack Benny (1894-1974) was an American comedian, vaudevillian, and actor.”
As for recent subject heading changes? “Voodooism” is now “Vodou”.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Staff – If you are waiting for action from Frank that others cannot take care of, Frank will return from a week of training on November 19. Linda will be away all week the week of November 19. The Computer Room will be closed on Thanksgiving Day and we will operate during our normal hours for the remainder of the busy weekend.
Maintenance - On Sunday Nov 18 the system will be down from 7am until 10am in order to build an item index. This will help us to enable a new system feature to enhance item housekeeping. During that time when Workflows is not available BiblioCommons functions will be limited to bibliographic searching. (We have a message in place.) SVA will not be available, and SIP authentication will not work until the system is back again at 10 am.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL FROM THE CCS STAFF!

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
On Demand Pick List (Onshelf Holds) - In the aftermath the upgrade we have been preparing the promised options for deployment on our production system. One of the most popular of these is the on-demand generation of a pick list. The wizard is “onshelf holds”. During this past week the option was enabled by SirsiDynix for us to configure. Our configuration will be complete by Monday November 4, to the CIRC, ILL and other requested users. It will be interesting to see how this works in production.
Texting – we have also asked SirsiDynix to configure the TEST environment so that we can proceed with testing of text messages. We will keep you posted on these efforts.
BiblioCommons – the Task Force has evaluated the custom enhancements. A document gathering all input has been written and will be sent to BiblioCommons on November 2.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Upgrade to 3.4.1 SP2 – We “arrived” on Symphony 3.4.1 SP2 on Wednesday morning, October 24. From all reports this upgrade went pretty well. There are a lot of “CCS heroes” out there who pulled together to make it happen – and to name names we would leave someone out. So we thank those who tested with us, those who got up early or stayed late to get clients installed, our operator who sits an overnight vigil watching backups, our engineers who barely sleep the night of the upgrade, those who might have been dealing calmly with the public when discharge slowed Wednesday morning, and the Maintenance Coordinators who worked on the client installation process with us.
Patron purge – Circulation staff will notice a slight change with your next monthly patron purge. The new patron purge report sent to us by SirsiDynix now gives us a list of patrons. Previously we produced that list through a separate process. So the purge report will be there, but it is now a one step process.
CCS ABSENCES NEXT WEEK:
Richard Shurman and Linda Zaleski will both be gone for most of Wednesday and the rest of next week to the Sirsi Consortia meeting in Detroit. (Halloween is always a great night to be in Detroit.) Please use WonderDesk to report any issues since we may not be able to respond to e-mails quickly.
