FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BiblioCommons bugs – There are several situations occurring in BiblioCommons that we are following closely. (1) It has been reported that patrons might be able to cancel or suspend holds that are already available. We have conducted many tests and are unable to replicate this problem. (2) We have not heard of any more occurrences of titles that are not able to be searched in the home library, but come up in the “all library”. (3) We have not heard of new problems with lag times existing more that 1-2 hours for availability status, in the last 2-3 weeks. If you are still experiencing any of these situations in the coming weeks please open a WonderDesk ticket. BiblioCommons has made some fixes of late – but not specifically to fix these problems. Our good fortune might be a fallout from other improvements.
BiblioCommons Staff Picks – a handy guide by Northbrook (thanks!) for creating staff picks lists has been posted on our web site under the BiblioCommons section.
UPDATE ON REPAIRS OF PATRONS WITH COLLECTION STATUS:
On Monday 12/5 Sirsi completed the last step in correcting those patrons whose status was incorrectly set to COLLECTION. Libraries that use Unique Management should know that beginning Tuesday 12/6, the Daily Collection UPDATE report and the Weekly COLLECTION Sync report contain accurate data.
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADING CHANGES:
Some important Library of Congress subject headings changed earlier this week.
The heading “Occult fiction” was changed to “Paranormal fiction”. This change only affected records that were coded as subject headings (650’s). Genre headings (or 655’s) with the same term of “Occult fiction” did not change. References are in place to assist catalog users.
“Occult fiction, American”, “Occult fiction, Australian”, and “Occult fiction, English” were also changed to “Paranormal fiction, American”, “Paranormal fiction, Australian”, and “Paranormal fiction, English.”
Besides those 4 changes, “Shipwreck survival in literature” was finally broken apart, so there’s a new heading for “Airplance crash survival in literature”.
Other subject headings include: “Acoli (African people)” was changed to “Acholi (African people”; “Gbaya (African people)” to “Gbaya (Ubangi-speaking people)”; “Sanjo (Folk music)” to Sanjo (Music)”; and “Torino automobile” to “Ford Torino automobile”.

NOVEMBER 18, 2011
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BiblioCommons – As of this writing we are anticipating a new build of BiblioCommons which will occur on Friday morning November 17. We continue to report anomalies in searching where the titles that you own may not come up in a search scoped to your library – but come up in a search of All Libraries. For those of you experiencing this please think analytically about the item that you report. Was it recently edited? Did it recently circulate, etc? All observations are good ones at this point and we might see a pattern emerge. (P.S. We heard from BiblioCommons Nov. 17 that they have re-indexed the database and are hoping this will clear up the problem, so that makes it even more important to let us know if the issue is ongoing.)
Testing Tuesdays – the network tests will continue from 6:30-8 AM on Tuesday mornings until we have a clear measure of network performance in regard to our ability to download the SirsiDynix Symphony Client efficiently.
MEMBERSHIP EVALUATION SURVEY:
As per the e-mail we sent out November 14, we hope each department of your library will complete the online survey; the link is in that e-mail. December 9 is our requested deadline; thanks! We have reduced the number of mandatory questions to make response easier for those who don’t have a lot of dealings with CCS.
NEXT WEEK:
There will be no CCS News next week due to the holiday. We wish everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving!
CCS MEETINGS THE NEXT TWO WEEKS:
Mon., 11/28, 1:30, CCS: Budget & Finance
Wed., 11/30, 10:00, Wilmette: Governing Board (followed by retirement lunch for Jack Hurwitz; please RSVP to R. Shurman by Nov. 23 if you haven’t done so!)

A Halloween Riddle
Question: What’s a line in the weekly Purchase Alert report without a Call Number? Answer: A title that you don’t own. As requested, for titles you don’t own, the call number field is now populated with a random call number from the database, one that’s attached to that title. This call number will appear with double parentheses, surrounding it like so ((SOME ONE LIKE YOU)).
Network Testing
We continue to pursue a way to improve the network throughput. We will be doing another network test on Tuesday morning, Nov 1 between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Please schedule early staff accordingly.
