FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

NEW TIPPING POINT APPLIANCE ON OUR NETWORK - On April 3 we will be installing a replacement network appliance. On that morning very early (about 6am), libraries will experience a brief network interruption to switch to the new device.  All your devices should, however, re-connect normally.  Although we do not expect this to adversely affect your normal operations, if for some reason you do not connect properly that morning, please contact the computer room immediately.

TEXTING – We are on hold with our trial for the next week or so as our Test Server will be used for our Enterprise trial and some setup is involved.

SPRING CANCELED:
False alarm, it only feels that way...

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Text Testing - Frank is testing the Texting Feature with four test teams: CCS, Crystal Lake, Lake Villa and Wilmette staff.  Holds testing began this week and we are trying to fix a bug that was noticed by all of the test team with the same results.  No more testing is planned.  We will keep you informed.

Help Desk - Please make sure you use the Help Desk to open tickets and issues.  This will keep the computer room members in the loop, making it easier to trace and keep track of problems or issues.

Updating Hardware - We will be updating hardware in April and there might be day or two where we may have to take the network down for fifteen minutes before the libraries open.  We will be replacing old equipment that has reached its' End of Life support.  We will confirm the dates as we get closer to the installation.

AUTHORITIES NEWS OR RDA HEADING CHANGES UPDATE:
This week CCS is loading a file of 4,768 updated authority records.  These authority records contain many heading changes because of RDA (or the new cataloging rules that catalogers are just getting used to).  This file was split into four groups, and each group will be loaded on a different night, so that our computer system can handle the changes without disturbing normal library hours and activities.

Looking over headings that were changed last night, you will see more headings with abbreviations written out (like Dept. to Department or arr. to arranged); headings for books of the Bible changed (like Bible.Nehemiah and not Bible. O.T. Nehemiah); and authors with approximate dates written out (like Ptolemy, 2nd cent. to Ptolemy, active 2nd century).

Stay tuned for more changes over the next month or so.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

COSUGI Meeting – Bob and Linda (and Richard)  will be away at the SirsiDynix national users’ meeting beginning Wednesday March 13 until Monday March 18.  We look forward to learning all sorts of “good stuff”, taking your questions with us and meeting with other vendors you are using. It is always a very productive conference for us.

Willie’s Last Day – Willie’s last day with us will be March 16. We are looking for a special person to fill this position and will begin interviews soon. If you have someone to recommend please let us know. Willie’s projects will be temporarily divided up between remaining staff. Contact Frank about BookMyne, BookMyne Plus, or Facebook. Contact Linda about Books by Mail and Director’s Station. A good way to reach us to work on issues is via the Help Desk.

OCLC Number – OCLC will be expanding the OCLC number by one digit and adding a prefix. This will affect our bibliographic file. We are finding out more about this change and we know that a service pack will need to be installed for Workflows.  We hope to test the change in April as soon as it is released from SirsiDynix. Please stay tuned as we establish dates to install the service pack to production. We are learning more about this from SirsiDynix daily.  Naturally we will keep you informed

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

IPLAR – Help for sections 17-19 of the IPLAR can be found in the following document which was recently updated. IPLAR

COMPUTERS IN LIBRARIES ARTICLE– We would recommend the article Tech Tips for Every Librarian found in the Jan/Feb issue of Computers in Libraries, pps. 24-25.  This article is a great checklist of tasks that should be looked at annually to maintain the health of your local IT network environment.

CUSTOMER SUPPORT TECHNICIAN
– It is with regret that we will be saying goodbye to Willie Balitaan in mid-March. Willie’s service to the CCS organization has been stellar over a 13 year period part-time and full-time.  We will miss him but are happy to see him making an upwards career move. We are also happy that Willie will help us with the transition. This means that we are accepting resumes from outstanding candidates.  The job description and contact email is at  http://ccslib.org/Jobsatccs.php.

Please also drop Linda an email if you have interest or have a recommendation.

BIG RDA CHANGES OCCURRING NOW AND OVER THE NEXT MONTH OR SO:
This week CCS loaded 2 files from Marcive. One file included 3458 updated authority records and the other included 350 new authority records that our database needed, but were not available before.

The 3458 updated authority records contained many heading changes because of RDA (or the new cataloging rules that catalogers are just getting used to).

Under RDA rules, headings that used to include titles of nobility and rank are not going to be included now, so for example, the author of all those Sherlock Holmes stories has a new heading in our catalog. The old heading was “Doyle, Arthur Conan, Sir, 1859-1930”, and is now “Doyle, Arthur Conan, 1859-1930”. There are references from the older form. Over the past few nights, the system has been feverishly changing over 500 bibliographic records to the new heading (and will finish up the last of the changes tonight).

Other notable RDA changes, include spelling out abbreviations in corporate headings, so now you will have “United States. Department of State” instead of the old heading, which was “United States. Dept. of State”.  Also there will be big changes with headings for the Bible. The Old Testament and the New Testament will not be abbreviated in headings (before you might have found a heading like “Bible. O.T.”).  Headings for individual books of the Bible in RDA will not include the testament if belongs in, so for example, you might find a heading like “Bible. Matthew” (the older form of the heading was “Bible. N.T. Matthew”)

Some of those headings (especially some governmental departments) have already changed in our database, and other changes will occur over the next month or so.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

We have asked SirsiDynix to change an option for the way holds are handled based on the requests of the Circulation and ILL Technical Groups. The change should be made on Monday to take effect on Tuesday, February 26.
We thank Jeanne Etling at Fox River Valley for testing this out on the test server over the past few weeks.

Currently: Workflows is configured to fill active unavailable hold when charging a holdable copy.

New setting: Workflows will be configured to fill active available or unavailable title hold when holdable or non-holdable copy charged.

NEW EVANSTON OUTLET TO START FILLING HOLDS FOR ALL CCS LIBRARIES: As of Sunday, March 3, the Evanston Chicago-Main outlet will begin filling holds for all CCS libraries, after their startup period has concluded.

TEXTING notices through Workflows – we have been working on this option and we are slowly making progress getting the setup to work on our test system. We hope to have one or two libraries test this with us as a next step in the beginning of April. If your library would like to volunteer to try this feature with us, please contact Linda or Frank in the Computer Room .

Index Rebuild on Sunday - We are rebuilding keyword indexes early Sunday morning, February 10.  The Workflows system, SVA, and authentication will become unavailable about 6am on Sunday morning and will be available again no later than 11:30 am. The rebuild  is necessary to incorporate RDA and fix some keyword indexing problems.

BiblioCommons solves nasty problem with IE8– there have been problems with IE8 and BiblioCommons Advanced Search functions reported by patrons and libraries using PWB. As of this morning Feb 7 BiblioCommons reports the problems are fixed. They shared that there were two problems interacting badly and thus making the situation hard to diagnose and fix. In the end our project manager at BC tested it personally before they issued the all clear.

AUTHORITIES NEWS:
On Thursday, Feb. 7th, CCS sent 7993 bibliographic records to Marcive for authorities processing. 2074 bibliographic records were updated and sent back to us. They were reloaded into our system, along with 3297 new authority records.
