APRIL 13, 2012

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Report As Discussed At April 12 ILL Meeting:

There's a new report titled
“Work Phone B4 Phone " that runs daily and is available from the CCS Reports Web Page. It lists ALL patrons whose WORKPHONE field appears before their 'PHONE field' within their patron record.
When the WORKPHONE field appears before the PHONE field, the WORKPHONE field content will display/print ( in Workflows ) instead of the PHONE field content when printing 'Hold Slips'. If the patron prefers to be notified via the WORKPHONE, then no change is necessary. If the patron prefers to be notified via the PHONE field, you can edit the record to place the PHONE field first. On the address tab change the field name WORKPHONE to PHONE and the field name PHONE to WORKPHONE. You'll have to move/interchange the phone numbers as well. Then click Modify User .

THIS WEEK’S HOMEWORK
:
The April 1 issue of Library Journal has the annual article on the library automation marketplace, plus a short supplement with user satisfaction ratings (pp. 30-45). These are well worth a few minutes, and food for thought.

WELCOME to Karen Danczak Lyons, who starts as Director at Evanston on Monday, April 16!

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

Index Rebuild CANCELLED – after some investigation and hearing back from Roger Anderson (who has returned from vacation), we decided that an index rebuild was not necessary this year. The systems will all operate normally while we are closed on April 8.

BookMyne – During the last week we upgraded web services that run BookMyne to Release 3.2. This should improve performance with Android devices.

April 8
– The Computer Room will be closed on April 8. All services are scheduled to run normally.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL FROM THE CCS STAFF!

CCS News

MARCH 30, 2012

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Index Rebuild – it is our custom to rebuild the bibliographic indices on the Sunday when Easter is observed because all CCS libraries are closed. This year that is Sunday, April 8. We are planning to build the indices again this year. Because Roger is away, we will make our final plans on April 4 when he returns. On the Wednesday or Thursday before the rebuild, the appropriate notices will go into the BiblioCommons banner. When we proceed with an index rebuild, iBistro and Workflows will not be available ALL DAY and EVENING on April 8. BiblioCommons will not be able to connect to our machine while Workflows is down, so patron account functions and holds will not be available, but patrons will still be able to access BiblioCommons and search bibliographic information during the index rebuild. SVA and authentication will also be unavailable while Workflows is down.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Backup time – we had a question about this earlier in the week. Full system backups commence every Saturday night about 6:30-7:00. They run throughout the night. During the initialization process the systems are interrupted for a few moments and usually come back up right away. In the recent past the system was down all night to perform backups – so we are really glad to be able to run our newer procedures.

BiblioCommons – The task force is busy at work again. CCS and BiblioCommons have exchanged initial specification documents for three of our enhancement requests and the task force is currently reviewing and commenting on the specs.

Spring Break – Bob will be away March 29,30 and April 1.

TWO WARS AND A RIVER, OR, SOME IMPORTANT SUBJECT HEADING CHANGES:

Some important subject headings changes occurred recently.

Our first war is : “ Iraq War, 2003-“. The updated heading is : “Iraq War, 2003-2011”. The change was that the ending year was added.

Our second war is : “United States – History—French and Indian War, 1755-1763.” The updated heading is: “United States – History—French and Indian War, 1754-1763.” The change is that the war started one year earlier than the old subject heading stated it had. In regards to this heading change, headings for battles from this war (for example, “Fort Necessity, Battle of, Pa., 1754”), had their references updated. Also history headings for states that were affected by the war were also updated (for example, “Virginia—History—French and Indian War, 1754-1763”).

As for the river - The old heading was: “Rio Grande”. The updated heading is: “Rio Grande (Colo.-Mexico and Tex.)”. The heading for the valley was also updated from “Rio Grande Valley” to ”Rio Grande Valley (Colo.-Mexico and Tex.)”.

OTHER AUTHORITIES NEWS: This week, CCS loaded two more files that were obtained from Marcive. One contained 1659 updated authority records and the other contained 435 new authority records. The updated authority records contain heading changes, new death dates, and other information that will keep our database as up to date as possible. The 435 were authority records that were needed in our database, but were not available before this time.

MARCH 16, 2012

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Old Holds List - Lately one of the libraries noted that the old holds list includes suspended holds. If you need this adjusted, open a WonderDesk ticket.

Listserve Changes - Thanks to those who are now putting such requests through the WonderDesk. This means that all of our staff have access to the request and we can better check that your request was satisfied.

Network News - We have ascertained that the problems in the network were due to the addition of several dedicated lines that were not reflected in our packetshaper settings. We will be contacting libraries when we make adjustments to the configuration at our end.

CCS News

MARCH 9, 2012

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BiblioCommons interruptions - Three libraries have reported temporary outages on BiblioCommons which last only a few minutes but have been noticed by a few patrons. If this happens in your library please contact the computer room – we need to report it to BiblioCommons right away. At the same time we may ask you to look at the “page source” from your browser and find the app server. It is about 10 lines down in the HTML. This will identify one of several servers that is being used. The outage may have to do with a particular server which is out.

New BiblioCommons release
- On Thursday March 8 BiblioCommons installed a new release of the software. Details were posted on s-help earlier in the week and it is also in the FAQ section of the web site under BiblioCommons. As of this writing we are looking at some display problems that were reported in Advanced Search.

HIGHLAND PARK TEST DATA LOAD:

It is expected that the test load of Highland Park’s data will be completed on March 9. This only affects the test environment.

POLICY CHANGE REQUESTS:

Since I will be at PLA almost all of next week, it is especially timely to remind everyone that if you have Symphony policy change requests, please be sure to communicate them via WonderDesk instead of my personal e-mail where they’ll languish untended. Thanks! -- Richard Shurman

CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:

None, but we’ll see some of you at PLA!

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Network changes – we have completed the installation of our new switch that will accommodate our steady expansion of network connections.

BiblioCommons – we have had some correspondence from BiblioCommons about our needed enhancements. Thanks to those who have provided additional examples and clarifications to the BiblioCommons programming/design teams.

Thanks for involving the Computer Room
– we continue to answer a myriad of questions about, SIP, Self-check, authentication, RFID etc. Thanks for communicating your needs and discussing new solutions with us. We are always happy to join you in phone calls with vendors or assist your research.

HIGHLAND PARK TEST LOAD:
Sirsi is loading Highland Park’s data onto the Test Server through March 9. Please avoid using the test system during that time, especially anything that would change data.

ORDERED HOLD FILL
:
We have adjusted the Ordered Hold Fill policy (which checks your own library first, then the libraries before you on your delivery route, before checking the rest of CCS) to reflect last year’s route change for McHenry. Please let us know about any other route changes.
