FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:

AUTHORITIES NEWS:
Last week, CCS loaded 2 files that were obtained from Marcive. One file contained 1452 updated authority records and the other file contained 459 authority records that were needed, but not available until now.

JANUARY 20, 2012
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BC and Spanish Interface – BiblioCommons has started working on the changes necessary to accommodate the addition of Spanish, beginning with the logos. They estimate they will be done by the end of next week.
Network Testing – we continue our network testing but will be working with a few libraries on an individual basis in our next round of tests. These tests should not affect the greater CCS population. If we plan any more systemwide outages early in the morning, we will be sure to tell you in sufficient time
Highland Park – You will see that we have welcomed Highland Park by the appearance of “HPLIBRARY” in Workflows.
Trouble with Fines on Wednesday – Thank you for your early reports. The problem was related to the addition of Highland Park to our policy tables by Sirsidynix. Due to quick action on everyone’s part the problem was quickly identified and corrected.
CCS MEETING NEXT WEEK:
Thur., 1/26, 9:00, Fremont: SILLRAP

JANUARY 13, 2012
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Sunday, Jan 15 – we will interrupt the system (Workflows, iBistro, SIP, SVA etc.) at 9 am for about 5 minutes to perform some maintenance on our logs. BiblioCommons will be limited to searching only during the short duration of the outage.
MEMBERSHIP EVALUATION SURVEY:
We thank the 83 respondents to our membership evaluation survey, representing a very good cross-section of roles in our libraries, and 20 more responses than our 2007 survey. The results and analysis are in the hands of the Long Range Planning Committee for review, and will be distributed to the Governing Board for the Feb. 1 meeting and to the rest of the CCS community. No bombshells, but very helpful as always.
WEATHER CLOSINGS INFORMATION REMINDER:
This is just a reminder that when we cancel a meeting or close the office due to inclement weather, we will send out e-mail; update the online meeting calendar; include the information in the answering messages of Richard Shurman (x201), Bonnie Owens (x200) and the Computer Room (847-342-5303); and post it at www.emergencyclosings.com, which also means it will scroll across your TV screen. If you’re not sure, just call the office and whoever is on our end should know the status.
CCS MEETINGS NEXT WEEK:
Wed., 1/18, 9:30, CCS: SCRAP
Thur., 1/19, 9:30, Cary: PAS
Fri., 1/20, noon, Jameson’s: Technical Group Chairs lunch

Next week, CCS will load two more files that were obtained from Marcive. One will contain over 1700 updated authority records and the other will contain over 400 new authority records that are needed in our database, but were not available before.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BiblioCommons bugs – There are several situations occurring in BiblioCommons that we are following closely. (1) It has been reported that patrons might be able to cancel or suspend holds that are already available. We have conducted many tests and are unable to replicate this problem. (2) We have not heard of any more occurrences of titles that are not able to be searched in the home library, but come up in the “all library”. (3) We have not heard of new problems with lag times existing more that 1-2 hours for availability status, in the last 2-3 weeks. If you are still experiencing any of these situations in the coming weeks please open a WonderDesk ticket. BiblioCommons has made some fixes of late – but not specifically to fix these problems. Our good fortune might be a fallout from other improvements.
BiblioCommons Staff Picks – a handy guide by Northbrook (thanks!) for creating staff picks lists has been posted on our web site under the BiblioCommons section.
UPDATE ON REPAIRS OF PATRONS WITH COLLECTION STATUS:
On Monday 12/5 Sirsi completed the last step in correcting those patrons whose status was incorrectly set to COLLECTION. Libraries that use Unique Management should know that beginning Tuesday 12/6, the Daily Collection UPDATE report and the Weekly COLLECTION Sync report contain accurate data.
LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADING CHANGES:
Some important Library of Congress subject headings changed earlier this week.
The heading “Occult fiction” was changed to “Paranormal fiction”. This change only affected records that were coded as subject headings (650’s). Genre headings (or 655’s) with the same term of “Occult fiction” did not change. References are in place to assist catalog users.
“Occult fiction, American”, “Occult fiction, Australian”, and “Occult fiction, English” were also changed to “Paranormal fiction, American”, “Paranormal fiction, Australian”, and “Paranormal fiction, English.”
Besides those 4 changes, “Shipwreck survival in literature” was finally broken apart, so there’s a new heading for “Airplance crash survival in literature”.
Other subject headings include: “Acoli (African people)” was changed to “Acholi (African people”; “Gbaya (African people)” to “Gbaya (Ubangi-speaking people)”; “Sanjo (Folk music)” to Sanjo (Music)”; and “Torino automobile” to “Ford Torino automobile”.
