FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
TESTING – During our network test this week we found that the combination of our new firewall and our network appliances still do not improve throughput to the threshold desired to download the Java client easily. We will continue to work on this issue. In the meantime, we have the necessary ports now available to continue expansion of SIP-enabled applications.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
On Thursday, Oct. 6th, CCS sent a group of bibliographic records to Marcive for authorities processing – 6787 bibliographic records were sent, and Marcive returned 2058 updated ones, as well as 3309 new authority records. The bibliographic records were loaded into our system on Thursday, and the authority records will be loaded on Friday morning, Oct. 7th. Full cataloging may resume then.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Firewall Success!!! - The transition to the new firewall went very smoothly! We have Frank Correa and his consultants to thank for excellent planning and a methodical manual check of all entries in the new firewall. On Wednesday morning we unplugged all libraries at 6:40 am and had everyone plugged into the new firewall by about 7:00 am. This new firewall will allow us additional SIP connections in the future. We also expect that it might help with the downloads of Symphony Clients so we are going to doing some testing in the next few weeks. Our first test is planned for the morning of Wednesday October 4th 6:30am-7:30am. Please schedule your early staff accordingly. We will put the appropriate message on BiblioCommons.
AUTHORITIES NEWS:
This week, CCS loaded 2 files that were obtained from Marcive. One file contained 1732 updated authority records and the other file contained 445 authority records that were needed, but not available until now.

CCS Authorities Librarian
BIBLIOCOMMONS NEWS AND READING:
We have sent out e-mail dispatches from BiblioCommons about the new production build implemented September 29, highlighted by the new Landing Page for users. Two other BiblioCommons notes:
*We are getting pricing for the new Spanish language version. Note about the release notes: BiblioCore is the name of the product we use.
*There’s a very interesting article on the New York Public Library-BiblioCommons partnership in the current (September 2011) issue of ALA’s Smart Libraries Newsletter.
CONGRATULATIONS to Dundee on the installation of their 3M Self-Check/RFID system (automated sorting installation underway) and to Cary on the progress of their heated sidewalks.
OUR GOOD WISHES to Winnetka-Northfield Director David Seleb, who announced that he is leaving Oct. 26 to become Director at Indian Trails.
RIP to former Indian Trails Director Ken Swanson, who passed away around a week ago.

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Firewall change Wednesday September 28 – don’t forget!!! Our new firewall will be installed the morning of Wednesdsay September 28 – beginning at 6:30 am. Please be sure that you have contacted your network consultants and alerted them in case it has any impact on your equipment (it shouldn’t). Please be sure you have staff ready to verify that your connections to CCS are still intact after the switch (they should be). We plan to have the job done by 8am – but advise that you do not schedule early staff on that day. Watch the s-help list for notices on our progress. BiblioCommons will be up while we make the switch but since BiblioCommons cannot connect to our system it will have query only capability.
LIBRARY CLOSING:
Dundee is closed Sept. 22-23 for the installation of their new RFID and automated sorting systems. Here’s to a smooth one!

FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
Firewall project update - Step one of our firewall project went well on Sunday, Sept 11 . Our plans for the remainder of the project are on track and will be reviewed at the Maintenance Coordinators Meeting on Sept 20. We no longer feel the test scheduled on Wednesday Sept 21 at 6:30 am is necessary – so we are canceling that activity and you can assume that day will be “business as usual”. On Wednesday September 28 at 6:30 am however we plan to make the switch to the new firewall. Since the firewalls have been configured, there will be no changes made until after the "live date". This means no new connections, or additions (SIP, Ports, Routers) will be added until then. Please watch your listservs for more information and you should still schedule network staff and “early bird” tech services staff accordingly for September 28. Be sure that you contact your network consultants as well and inform them of our plans.

BiblioCommons – BiblioCommons tells us they will be down Sunday Sept 11, 2011 between 7am and 11am CENTRAL TIME to perform hardware upgrades, including new routers and switches. These upgrades are part of ongoing maintenance to allow for future growth and to improve reliability. We will be getting a message out about this on the BiblioCommons interface soon.
Firewall project update - In order to upgrade software in our existing firewall we will interrupt service to all applications intermittently between 7:30 am and 10am on Sunday morning September 11. On Wednesday Sept 21 at 6:30 am we plan to run a short test for connectivity and on Sept 28 at 6:30 am we plan to make the full switch to a new firewall. The plans will be reviewed with the Maintenance Coordinators at the meeting on Sept 20. AUGUST 26, 2011
FROM THE COMPUTER ROOM:
BookMyne – BookMyne testing is coming along and we will be making plans with you who indicated a wish to deploy it after the Labor Day holiday. At the moment we can tell you that there are several discoveries that you should note. None of these should stop our implementation but you should be aware of these points.
1. Book Lists created in BookMyne are separate and apart from those created in Bibliocommons.
2. There is no way to broaden or narrow a search by library/group/system.
3. The underlying search engine is the same used by iBistro.
4. There is no help in the product, but there are videos released by SirsiDynix posted on Youtube which they should make available to the patrons. We have linked to these in the bottom of your reports and we will be placing links on our web page next week.
5. We have been unable to test barcode scanning capabilities.
6. We have experienced intermittent ability to connect in some circumstances. At a test library this was related to a firewall setting. The SirsiDynix listserv has also reported intermittent problems with connections (with cause unknown) so be aware if you experience these (and keep trying).
MORE STATISTICS:
As a supplement to the offerings in Google’s “Google Analytics” for BiblioCommons activity, we can now offer a system-wide view of BiblioCommons use statistics. This new report is compiled monthly and is accessible from the web, located within the ‘Online Catalog Statistics’ report group. July is there now.
The data used in the report is sourced from your Google Analytics account (using Google’s API), so the numbers shown there are the same as those you’ll find using the Google Analytics reporting tools. The report is unique from those offered by Google in that it shows monthly activity for all libraries within the one report. This report won’t be available until the 3rd of each month due to a Google disclaimer with regards to processing: “While Analytics data is processed regularly throughout the day, the final collection window for any given 24-hour period of time is not complete until up to 48 hours after that day ends.”
